Job Description

CALPAK is a travel lifestyle brand creating thoughtfully designed products that bring organization, style, and ease to every journey. Built on a foundation of quality, function, and modern design, we’re focused on delivering meaningful experiences for our customers both online and in-store. As we continue to grow our retail presence, we’re looking for leaders who are excited to help shape how our brand comes to life in physical spaces.

The Director of Retail is responsible for leading all aspects of the company’s brick-and-mortar retail business — from operations and team leadership to new store openings and expansion strategy. This role drives sales growth, profitability, and brand consistency across all stores while developing scalable processes to support future growth. The Director will partner closely with cross-functional teams in Real Estate, Visual Merchandising, Marketing, E-commerce, and People to ensure every store delivers an exceptional, on-brand customer experience.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

Retail Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and execute a multi-year retail operations strategy aligned with brand and financial goals.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing field organization including Regional/District Managers and Store Leaders.
  • Establish and monitor KPIs (sales productivity, conversion, labor, NPS, shrink, etc.) to drive performance across the fleet.
  • Champion a culture of accountability, service, and brand pride across all stores.

New Store Openings & Expansion

  • Partner with Real Estate, Construction, and Design teams to plan and execute new store openings, remodels, and relocations.
  • Own the operational readiness of each new location — including staffing, training, systems setup, merchandising, and opening-week execution.
  • Build and refine a scalable “store opening playbook” covering pre-opening timelines, milestones, and post-opening review processes.
  • Provide input on market opportunities, store layouts, and operational considerations for site selection.

Operations & Customer Experience

  • Oversee daily retail operations, ensuring flawless execution of brand, service, and operational standards.
  • Partner with Visual Merchandising to deliver best-in-class product presentation and storytelling.
  • Collaborate with E-commerce and Marketing teams to integrate omnichannel programs that drive traffic and conversion.
  • Implement tools, technology, and processes to improve efficiency, communication, and performance visibility.

Financial & Business Management

  • Own the retail P&L, managing revenue, labor, and controllable expenses to achieve or exceed targets.
  • Build annual budgets and forecasts in partnership with Finance.
  • Analyze store performance and identify opportunities for growth, cost savings, and improved productivity.
  • Support inventory management, planning, and allocation decisions to optimize sell-through and minimize markdowns.

People & Culture

  • Partner with HR to recruit, train, and retain top retail talent.
  • Create clear development paths for field leadership and store management teams.
  • Foster an inclusive, high-performance environment that reflects brand values and inspires teams to deliver exceptional results.

Qualifications:

  • 8–12 years of progressive retail leadership experience, with direct oversight of multi-store operations and new store openings.
  • Proven ability to scale a retail fleet or build from early-stage growth to multi-region footprint.
  • Strong financial acumen and analytical skills, with full P&L ownership experience.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and project management skills.
  • Deep understanding of retail operations, customer experience, and omnichannel integration.
